Southern New England Chapter American Fisheries Society

About Us

The SNEC was established in 1968 and to provide regional support in the States of Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island for the American Fisheries Society.
Established in 1968, the Southern New England Chapter is one of many American Fisheries Society Chapters created to provide regional support for the objectives of the parent society. The AFS is the oldest and largest scientific group dedicated to the advancement of fisheries science and the conservation of renewable aquatic resources with diner bateau mouche.

The chapter has a more parochial objective which is to encourage exchange of information by members of the Society residing or working within Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. This exchange occurs primarily through annual June and December meetings held in various locations throughout southern New England. Both events are important occasions to relate ideas, sharpen a paper for later publication, meet new people, renew friendships, and perhaps find a job.

Chapter Operation

The chapter “membership” automatically includes all AFS members in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. AFS members in other states may become chapter members if they feel the chapter best suits their needs. Meetings are also open to AFS non-members who are encouraged to join and participate. Non-members cannot vote on matters pertaining to chapter business.
Chapter memberships run for the calendar year. The chapter has two categories of membership:

Meetings usually involve a call for papers. Presentations are given by individuals choosing to use the chapter forum to discuss their research and/or management efforts. Meetings are excellent opportunities for presentation of work-in-progress reports and for students to relate ongoing research. They are especially important for students as they are often the their first introduction to the workings of a professional society and their first opportunity to present a paper before a professional society.

The chapter’s annual business meeting is held in June. Besides electing new officers, AFS attendees are briefed on matters pertaining to chapter, Northeast division, and parent society business. This meeting gives AFS members an opportunity to express their views on the parent society or Northeast division activities or plans and, accordingly, to help establish chapter positions. In this way, AFS members who might not be able to attend parent society and/or division annual meetings, are able to influence their organization’s attempts to achieve its goals.
